We’re proud to celebrate the accomplishments of four exceptional students who recently defended their theses and dissertations.

Nick Chin, Ph.D.
Congratulations to Nick Chin on a successful defense of his dissertation, “Investigating coastal physics, chemistry and ecology through a merger of machine learning and process-based modeling.” His interdisciplinary work sheds light on key drivers of coastal phenomena such as red tide (Karenia brevis). Nick’s supportive spirit and commitment to fostering a collaborative lab environment have made a lasting impact.
Yiyang (Calvin) Kang, Ph.D.
Congratulations to Calvin Kang on successfully defending his dissertation! His work explored the processes and consequences of mangrove poleward expansion across Florida’s Gulf Coast. He has been a brilliant, kind and dedicated researcher and teammate. He will be beginning an exciting new chapter as a software development engineer at Amazon.

Dogil Lee, Ph.D.
Congratulations to Dogil Lee on a successful dissertation defense! His research, “Water availability and quality in the Upper Floridan Aquifer: Impacts of agricultural practices, climate, and land use,” offers important insights into water resource sustainability. We are incredibly proud of all he has achieved and look forward to seeing his continued impacts as a postdoctoral researcher at Ohio State University.
Katie Schoenberger, M.S.
Congratulations to Katie Schoenberger on successfully defending her master’s thesis! Her research examined how submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) interacts with flow dynamics in Florida’s spring-fed rivers. Katie’s determination, creativity and curiosity have been inspiring throughout her time as a student. Next, she will be continuing her passion for water science as a Minimum Flows and Levels Scientist at the Suwannee River Water Management District.
